Laser hair removal, unlike conventional methods, works on the principle of selective photothermolysis. A concentrated beam of light at a specific wavelength is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicles, leading to thermal damage and halting hair growth. Laser differs from IPL in that it emits a uniform beam of light, which allows for precise treatment. IPL uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths, making it less effective at permanent hair removal.

The effectiveness of the treatment depends on the contrast between hair colour and skin tone – the best results are achieved with dark hair on fair skin. Although IPL is cheaper, it only provides short-term results, which is why laser hair removal is regarded as a permanent and advanced solution.

Long-lasting results of laser hair removal

Laser hair removal ensures a noticeable reduction in hair, slows down hair growth and leaves the skin smoother. After a course of around 8 treatments (at intervals of 4–6 weeks), hair grows back more slowly and is finer and lighter in colour.

The effects can last for several years. To maintain these results, follow-up treatments are recommended every 12–24 months. Although some people may experience partial regrowth (e.g. after a year or two), laser hair removal provides a much more lasting result than shaving or waxing.
